In Emotional Intelligence 2.0, authors Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves point out that all sensory input— every sound, sight, smell, touch, or taste— passes through the limbic system first. That means we process everything emotionally first, and the “thinking part” comes later in processing. And we can “think” about an event all we want, but thinking doesn’t change the attached emotional meaning.
The way we relate to experience is often more important than the experience itself.
But as I’ve highlighted in a different post, under certain circumstances the emotional component of a memory can be intentionally changed. I’ve helped many clients learn to do this independently through Emotional Freedom Techniques, which I view as one of the greatest breakthroughs in mental health ever.
If you’d like to change your experience, just contact me through my website. I’d love to teach you as well.
